Part 1- Designing Your Custom Home, A Builders Perspective

Designing Your Custom Home, A Builders Perspective- Part 1

As a Builder with 30+ years of experience constructing custom and production homes, I've see all kinds of home designs. In this multi part series, I will look at each part of a home design and offer my perspective on what works and not. My opinion is based upon building speculation (offered for sale) and Custom Homes that I've constructed for Homeowners. I'll be looking at design functionality as well as the homes potential for maximum resale value.

Below is a plan designed by The Sater Group. This is just one example of the excellent work this company does. Please visit their web site for additional plans.

Description
The Padova exemplifies casual elegance. With its inviting porte-cochere, round turreted stair tower and open views, no space in this home disappoints. Crafted in a transitional Spanish-Mediterranean flair, the home’s barrel tiled hip rooflines with cast stone accents makes a stunning statement of luxury. The Padova is the ultimate destination for relaxation and entertainment! You will immediately feel like you are arriving at a luxurious resort when you drive up under the dramatic porte-cochere. Upon entering the grand entry doors, you are greeted by a two story grand salon with a stone fireplace and curved glass wall that overlooks the pool and view beyond. Ideally positioned between the formal and leisure areas is the island wet bar, perfect for parties small and large.
The grand two story foyer and living room of the Padova home plan is sure to make a lasting impression. The overlooking loft can be used for a quiet reading library or fun entertaining. This is accessed by a stunning circular staircase that overlooks the barrel vaulted dining room. Rounding out the second floor of the Padova is a theater room, guest suite, viewing deck and bunk room for visiting grandchildren.
Just as the home’s formal areas impress, the informal areas bring relaxation to its owners and guests alike. The gourmet kitchen, with walk in pantry and pass thru bar, are ideally located in the middle of both spaces. The Padova is perfect for entertaining large groups or family.
The casual wing of the home is perfect for leisure. The open leisure room, featuring disappearing, cornerless and pocketed sliding glass doors, embrace the wrap-around veranda. The island kitchen overlooks the leisure room and dining nook beyond.
The luxurious master suite features a bayed sitting area and his/her walk-in-closets, which are surmounted by an elegant master bath with columned whirlpool tub and walk-in shower.
Two spacious guest suites are remotely located on the first floor for maximum comfort and privacy for guests.
Ascending the grand circular staircase to the entertainment zone of the home, guests are treated to an overview of the barrel ceilinged dining room and grand salon below. The loft is the perfect place for a game of billiards or quietly reading a good book. Grab a drink from the wet bar and make your way to the theater room to watch a movie. This level also has another spacious guest suite as well as a fifth bedroom that is perfect as a bunk room. It is easy to see the allure of this beautiful Mediterranean home!
