Why Do Builders In Central Florida Use Plastic Water Pipes Instead of Copper?

25 years ago, most Orlando Custom Home Builders stopped using copper for hot and cold water lines because they leaked. Not when the homes were new but over time the water lines that were under the house slabs developed pin holes .There are lots of theories why this happens, from lightning strikes to acidic soils. The fact is, nobody really knows why the pipes develop leaks but something had to be done.

Various new plastic pipe systems were developed and installed but not all were successful. After a few false starts, a plastic pipe called CPVC was developed and successfully installed. Today it is the local industry standard.

Below is an example of copper plumbing that failed in a home that was constructed in the 1980’s. Without warning it suddenly started leaking under the slab below a bathroom vanity. The repair cost 100’s of dollars to fix.

Eventually, CPVC piping will have to be installed overhead and run through the attic trusses. The existing copper water lines will have to be abandoned. Certainly, a longterm fix that will cost thousands.

Have an awesome day!

Mike
